Re: Don't forget the other winter sport
Pound will have every weight class filled but 103 this year. Robbie Collins is a great coach and does all the teaching. Crabtree is learning and knows his role. Heck, Pound had a state qualifier last year (their first year) as a freshman. Will they win a bunch? No. Will they be competitive? A little. Will they learn how to be dedicated in the most demanding high school sport? Yes.
Re: Don't forget the other winter sport
I know PV has a kid that is an absolute monster, he is a smaller guy but should be the best in the region at his weight class.
As much hell as you guys are giving him, R13 is right, wrestling suffers at a lot of places because there isnt enough interest. I know when I was at PV there was always a team, but they did not garner the attention of the other winter sports.
Wrestling was a dying sport, MMA has helped out tons.

No he is not. Is has been taken serious for a while. Don't have to have 500 in the stands to take it serious.

This is next post is just stupid. Why would you throw in a school that doesn't have a team? I also listed the depth of coaching. The sport has already grown around here. I believe St Paul has a team. If Norton has one this year throw in Appy and Pound thats 4 new teams in the last few yrs.

Oh yeah Biggin PV should have a couple of kids do pretty good at state in the lower weight classes. I believe the 130 is ranked #1 and they have another ranked 2nd or 3rd I believe.
Re: Don't forget the other winter sport
Ive been to one HS wrestling match before...and feel asleep during it. No lie.
Re: Don't forget the other winter sport
Wrestling isn't a sub-sport by any means. You can say it isn't all that big, or popular, or doesn't mean anything. Doesn't matter to me. Wrestling is just as physical if not MORE physical than football itself. It's not a sport for people who can't stand to cut weight, learn the craft, or someone without passion. I loved and still love it more than I ever loved football. It's going to get bigger because more people are being exposed to the sport. More people are wanting to learn, and are starting to respect it for what it is. Not just the same old "Two guys rolling around in tights, grabbing each other." Get in a fight with a wrestler, you'll see why it helps.
Coach Luke Owens is at Kelly this year.
Coach Dean was an Assistant Coach for two years at J.J. Kelly and is a darn good wrestling coach, PERIOD. Give him a couple of years at John I. Burton and you'll see a struggle in the LPD. He taught me more than I ever thought I could learn in one year.
Coach Crutchfield can't coach at Appy, he is an Assistant Principal, and that means he can't coach. Unless soemthing has changed.
Pound will be a force too, Give Crabtree some time.
I've been to Grundy. Wrestling is bigger than football over there. They have a tournament called Agie Skeens Invitational ever single year. For the finals, I've seen them dress up like it's a prom or something, and that's just the fans. They have their own radio station for broadcasting matches. They have a warehouse that is beyond belief for the Wrestling team, so Don't tell me it isn't big.. I see it catching alot more steam the next couple of years.
Re: Don't forget the other winter sport
Crutch could still help out and give advice.
Re: Don't forget the other winter sport
As more schools get wrestling there will be more exposure to the sport at this level. People that have never seen it will and the sports fan that likes good athletics will see it and enjoy it. Thus it will grow more and more.
